Dollarization: The Growing Trend Among Brazilians Seeking Asset Protection
The buzzword of the moment for those looking to protect their wealth is dollarization. In simple terms, this means transferring a portion of one’s assets into U.S. dollars, investing in an economy that has historically proven to be stable, secure, and resilient.
According to a recent study by the Center for Financial Studies at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGVcef), investing in dollars can neutralize exchange rate impacts. Titled “Exchange Rate Impact on Brazilian Consumption and the Need for International Diversification,” the research highlighted key consumer behaviors and advocated for international diversification as a vital strategy to protect the purchasing power of Brazilians.
For Christiano Aguiar, General Manager of Garavello Capital—an American financial advisory firm founded in Pennsylvania—asset protection through various investment modalities goes beyond just “shielding” wealth. According to Aguiar, structured financial diversification allows investors to gain positive exposure to the vast opportunities of the international market.
“The U.S. financial market is massive and offers countless paths to achieving long-dreamed-of financial freedom, or passive income in dollars. It provides for long, medium, and short-term goals while ensuring stability during times of economic uncertainty,” explains Aguiar, who has over 20 years of experience in the sector.
Impact on Consumption and Recommended Percentages
The FGV study, presented in October 2024, noted that exchange rate fluctuations hit lower-income brackets harder due to the high cost of essential goods. However, higher-income groups are better able to mitigate these shocks through consumption diversification or behavioral adjustments.
To minimize risk, the researchers defended specific minimum percentages for international allocation:
General Investors: At least 16% of portfolios should be in foreign assets.
High-Net-Worth Families: At least 18% is recommended.
These percentages should be scaled upward based on individual interests and analyzed by a specialized financial advisor.
Strategic Planning vs. Simple Diversification
Experts suggest that diversifying in another currency is a broader strategy than simply spreading resources across different formats. It requires an intelligent, individualized plan.
“Among so many possibilities, it is fundamental that the investor and the financial planner have clear communication regarding the goals to be achieved,” argues Aguiar. While Brazilians traditionally keep their investments in the domestic market, the trend is shifting. Central Bank data from 2023 confirmed that R$ 45 billion was sent outside Brazil via international accounts, signaling a new era of asset protection.
Benefits for Travelers and Long-term Freedom
Beyond safety, dollarization is a strategic advantage for frequent international travelers. Aguiar notes that many clients are surprised by the ease and benefits of having international accounts already established.
“I often hear from families who travel frequently to the U.S. that having dollar-denominated accounts and investments made trip planning much easier and, in the long run, proved to be the best strategy for achieving financial independence,” Aguiar recalls.
